Discussion accompanying the exhibition New Sculpture?
Between Ornament and Monument
participants: Maria Brewińska (Zachęta, curator of the exhibition New Sculpture?), Fabio Cavallucci (director of the CCA Ujazdowski Castle, the co‑curator of the exhibition Figures from the New World), Agnieszka Tarasiuk (curator of Xawery Dunikowski Sculpture Museum, a branch of the National Museum in Warsaw, curator of the exhibition SKONTRUM and co‑curator of the exhibition Figures from the New World), Stach Szabłowski (CCA Ujazdowski Castle, curator of the exhibition The Red Bar)
moderator Daniel Muzyczuk (curator, Muzeum Sztuki Łódź)
Recent months have been rich in events and discussions concerning sculpture and its various traditions. Curators are animatedly setting about convincing the public that we should, once again, pose ourselves the question of what precisely sculpture is. Robert Morris situates sculpture in the space between decoration and monumentality. This depiction suggests not only the scale, but also the function that sculptural forms might fulfill today. Thus, if we are announcing a return of this phenomenon, it is worthwhile dwelling on what is its cause and what is its aim.

The exhibition deals with the relations between contemporary sculpture and modernism: a concept here understood as the striving towards modernity observable in art from the 1910s to the 1970s. The common denominator for the sculptures selected at the exhibition is their reference to such modernist tendencies as the rejection of ornamentation in the name of a simplification and purity of forms and constructions, as well as a concentration on the value of material and the function of an object.
