Andrea Fraser (b. 1965), lives and works in Los Angeles, California. She is a professor in the Department of Art in the School of Art and Architecture at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She is one of the most influential and provocative artists of her generation. Since the mid-1980s, her groundbreaking work in the field of institutional critique has explored the social, financial and affective economics of the organisation of the art world, its various disciplines and groups. Her art also examines the motivations of artists, collectors, gallerists, patrons and audiences of art, as well as financial investments in art. She combines conceptualist approaches with feminist investigations of subjectivity and desire in the field of artistic endeavour. Fraser's work is filled with insightful analysis, humour and pathos. The result has been described by Pierre Bourdieu as ‘a kind of infernal machine whose action causes the hidden truth of social reality to reveal itself’.
