Like other animations by Wojciech Bąkowski, Spoken Movie 3 was created without the use of a camera. The artist drew directly on the film strip, reviving the technique of Juliusz Antonisz, whose work fascinates him. The contours of the animated drawings tremble and the images are blurred. Content wise, the animation is a chronicle of the banal events in the lives of the inhabitants of a block of flats. The narrator notes, among other things, the repair of pipes, the cooking of stuffed cabbage rolls in the porter’s lodge, and the neighbourhood drunkard. The reality depicted in the film is ugly and grey. Only the cancer lurking in one of the flats is ‘set to keep growing’, fed on glucose. In the film, the sound is as important as the image. The narrator-artist shows a unique sensitivity to the language of the streets, and although he turns it into gibberish, he remains a keen observer of everyday life. He is also an existential naturalist, revealing his own sense of emptiness.
