Hiwa K is an Iraqi Kurd whose name means ‘hope’ in Kurdish. 20 years ago he found political asylum in Europe and stayed here as a refugee. Today he is considered one of the leading contemporary artists in the world. Hiwa’s artistic practice is based on a combination of autobiographical elements with myths, historical anecdotes and fictional stories. This method allows him to create a space where reality is suspended and the viewer is invited to a strong personal experience. The main theme of the Highly Unlikely but not Impossible exhibition is war – both from the perspective of a survivor and refugee, and from a theoretical standpoint. Hiwa is focused on showing the materiality of war and how matter fluctuates from culture to war, back and forth
