Complementing the research on housing in the Polish People's Republic, the contemporary section of the exhibition explores ideas within a different ideological construct; today people find themselves torn between a desire for home ownership, the untamed prices of the free market and an increasing demand for mobility; having to deal with economic crises and exceedingly migratory lifestyles, Polish cities share challenges with other urban environments around the globe.

We invited four architecture and design practices from outside of Poland to think about contemporary methods of intensifying dwelling space in highly contested urban areas, encouraging them not only to develop solutions, but to carefully define their framework of operation.

The spectrum of responses we received range from mobile housing devices to typological outlines for new forms of suburban settlements, from a research into foldable homes to an alternative narrative for lifetime housing trajectories.
As diverse as they might seem, they are fragments of a future that is humble and reduced, yet light and open to growth. In place of possession, they explore novel ways of use. The projects speak of a world that is fragile and insecure, but they also describe self-determined individuals that have learned to see change as an opportunity for more intense life experiences and new forms of togetherness.

After the presentation of the works, the public is invited to join the discussion.

    Tango on 16 square metres

Tango on 16 square metres explores ways of intensifying space, meandering between past and present, Polish realities and global phenomena. The exhibition investigates precarious urban dwelling conditions and their architectural responses through the lense of Zbigniew Rybczyński’s Academy Award-winning short film Tango from 1980.
