Andrzej Sapija’s piece belongs to a larger cycle Collection in which the artist
analysed the limits of the drawing medium and outlined new possibilities of
its interaction with reality. Fascinated by conceptualism, he treated art as
an intellectual method of ‘describing’ and representing the world by means
of signs, numbers, and rigorous methodology. Drawing gave him the basic
ability to record the shape and his vision on a two-dimensional surface,
where the representation is limited only by the size of the sheet of paper,
the artist’s imagination and the time necessary to create the finished work.
‘If I can draw the simplest object, a solid, e.g., a cube, so why can’t I draw
two, five, one hundred, one thousand, ten thousand objects? . . . I’m trying
to organise, define, and enclose what I have created in an unequivocal
identification through numbers. At some point, control becomes more and
more difficult, the number of items is becoming bigger and bigger, and it is
more difficult to control and organize them. They start to live independently’
