One Andrzej Pawłowski’s most famous works, this cycle is a visual
interpretation of the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible devoted to
the work of creation and the origins of the universe. Their main motif are
hands photographed against a cloudy sky and folded in the act of creation
that accompanies the ‘work of creating something new’. Their dramatic
expression is produced by the expression of hand gestures achieved by their
various arrangements, measures drawing from perspective deformation,
as well as strong contrasts of black and white photographs. The individual
works make an impression of being an extension of the author’s and
viewer’s body at the same time. The photographic prints from the Zachęta
collection were prepared by the artist for a collective exhibition in Koszalin
in 1972, originally as proof sheets (with the exhibition curator’s notes on the
back). They were displayed at the exhibition in larger formats — made by
Pawłowski himself.
