Oksana Briukhovetska, artist, curator and researcher from Ukraine, will speak about how textiles become involved in being a testimony and a political statement. From memories of embroidered family carpets in the Cherkasy region, Ukraine, to fabric collages — arpilleras, made during Pinochet’s dictatorship and nowadays, that she studied in Santiago, Chile; from the history of the African American quilt as an example of resilience embodied in aesthetics, that she learned about while living i the U.S., to the embroidery made by Ukrainian women in the Gulag and British suffragists in prison — these examples from different parts of the world and historical periods presented as acts of preserving cultural and political identities. They are interwoven into a story of struggle and creativity that resonates today. She will also speak about how she came to work with textiles, the influence of a family tradition of women’s needlework and how it aligns with feminist artistic practice and the therapeutic effect of working with fabric by hand. During the workshop the participants will be able to create their own textile collage with a message they want to share - testimony, memory, fantasy or statement.
